Update on Longriver

I am excited to share an important update about Longriver: with the blessing of the family office at which I used to work, I have turned Longriver into a business, and plan to grow now from managing my family’s savings to managing client capital. This is the most excited I’ve been in my career and the first step in what I hope will become my life’s work.

I call my strategy, ‘Global value investing, from Asia’. It combines three things: a business owner’s mindset for understanding and managing risk; my roots living and working in Hong Kong; and my fascination with the world’s great business models. If you’d like to know more, I’ve uploaded a brief introductory presentation in the Letters section of this site – see here. Of course, if you’ve followed this blog, you already know that it’s full of the influences which shaped me and examples of how I look at companies.

Investing is an uncertain enterprise, where we put something aside today in the hope of more tomorrow. In the fullness of time, most everything will be out of our control. But one thing I’ve learned from a mentor is that we can control how we treat our clients. So, I have strived to make my offering as fair as possible: reasonable fees with a hurdle rate; no side letters, soft dollars, or out-of-pocket expenses; and a formal cap on new funds raised. I hope the trusts this builds allows my clients and I to act from a position of strength when difficult times inevitably occur.

One other thing I want to do is build a community around my work to help accelerate my learning, like Annie Duke with the poker group she describes in ‘Thinking in Bets’. The last twelve months have been hectic for all sorts of reasons, namely starting a family and getting my business up and running. With the Longriver Partners Fund targeting launch in the fourth quarter of this year, I hope to begin writing again more frequently and re-engaging with you all too.

In the meantime, if you are interested to know more about Longriver and my plans, please do reach out; I would love to speak with you.

Thank you and Godspeed!
